Communing with nature
A three-day, two-night team-building programme the executive team of the Sofitel Chongqing was held at the Songtsam Retreat at Shangri-La in Diqing, Yunnan province.
It was attended by 20 executive staff members from the luxury hotel, and a few managers who joined the company a few days prior to the event. The retreat was chosen for its rich local culture, body and mind activities, and a remote yet scenic location in the Himalayas.
The Sofitel Chongqing wanted to focus on working issues and challenges within the company; integrating the values of attentiveness, care and respect; enjoying and valuing other cultures; developing a supportive spirit among the team; and simply getting to know each other better.
Songtsam Retreat offers a unique natural setting and a renowned lodging destination quality service, and it identifies the Tibetan culture. Guests will find a haven from city life. The resort's team-building programme aims to instil altruism, care and respect for others along personal development through cultural and well-being activities such as meditation and breathing exercises, Tibetan yoga, a traditional farm visit and meal, a monastery visit, outdoor activities and games.
Challenges and measures
For the management of Songtsam Retreat, organising such team-building events don't pose any challenges. All of the activities featured have been mastered at the resort over the years, expert staff members handling well-being and outdoor activities. The resort's main concern was to see the results of the activities in a corporate group comprising different backgrounds, and how they would react as a team and as individuals.
Based on the feedback from Sofitel, all goals and expectations for the team-building programme were met. Each executive team member also created an action plan to carry out in their daily working environment back in Chongqing.
"It is very rewarding to see that the major positive values being implemented are the core values reflecting the Himalayan region and beliefs such as team spirit, service a smile from the heart, a positive mind, caring and a hospitable attitude," says Patrick Marcel Druet, general manager of Songtsam Retreat.
"I am even now more convinced that such team building based on cultural and well-being activities is the perfect combination for corporate executive teams from urban environment in search of personal and group development and rejuvenation."
